International Women’s Day annually held on March 8 celebrates women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. At Mega Adventures, we believe in women power and are driven by it, since most of our operations in the background are prepped, supervised and executed by hard working young women who, we are proud to say, have helped us achieve a lot in the short time we’ve been operating.
To commemorate this special day with women all over the world, we have created a unique Kilimanjaro trek that will include a women and men group that will be scheduled to summit Uhuru peak on the 8th of March 2021.
A 4 day safari to the legendary Serengeti after the climb is an option in this combined Kilimanjaro Trek & Safari package, a great way to relax your sore muscles while enjoying world class game viewing and hospitality. However the Kilimanjaro Trek can also be done as a sole experience in our International Women’s Day 2021, Kilimanjaro Trek.
For this special trip, Women and Men from all over the world will converge in Moshi on the 1st of March in preparation for the start of the trek. It has been designed so that the group summits on the 8th of March via the Machame route, a challenge that will take seven arduous (but ultimately rewarding) days to complete.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet our representative who will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. The drive there takes approximately 1 hour, depending on the amount of traffic. Get yourself settled in and unwind the jetlag.
This day will largely be spent relaxing and getting to know each other. Later in the day, our guides will meet you, brief you about the mountain and trek as well as help you inspect your gear. Be sure to break in your trekking boots before bringing them for the climb!
Our adventure begins after breakfast at around 9am when our car arrives to pick you up from your hotel and take you to Machame Gate, where you register.
The first day of the trek takes you into the forest on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. This sweaty uphill walk is about 11km, though there is plenty to distract you in Kilimanjaro’s unique and sometimes endemic flora and fauna. We will also break for lunch while in the forest.
At the day’s end we reach the upper limit of the forest and the Machame Camp, where your porters will already have your tents erected and the cook will be busy preparing dinner.
Once again the second day involves a rather steep trek as we leave the forest behind and plough through the heath and moorland – Kilimanjaro’s second vegetation zone. You will notice that we will be setting a deliberately slow pace from today onwards, to help everyone acclimatize to the thinning air.
About an hour after lunch, the gradient levels out slightly as we approach the Shira Plateau, before crossing a large river gorge. Our final destination on this second day is the Shira Cave Campsite. As with every campsite on the route, your tent will be erected and snacks will be served upon arrival, followed by a main meal later in the evening.
The morning begins with a lengthy crossing of the plateau as we head due east towards Kibo. The beautiful views of the snowcapped summit make this part of the walk a rewarding one.Lunch this time is taken near the Lava Tower, at the foot of Kibo.
After lunch, conquer Lava Tower which stands at 4530m before heading to Barranco Camp at 3960m. This fairly steep descent might cause a slight headache upon reaching camp in the evening. This is entirely normal, and only worrying if the symptoms persist. Snacks and then dinner is served in the evening.
Today is a short day meant for acclimatization. We start by descending into a ravine directly at the base of the Barranco wall. This great wall takes over an hour to climb and you may need to use your hands on occasions to haul yourself up the rocks but please don’t be worried – this is not mountaineering and the wall is not dangerous at all.
After Barranco wall, we gently walk our way down into Karanga valley where another steep climb awaits us before we reach camp overlooking the valley. Both lunch and dinner will be served in this camp.
After breakfast, we head for Barafu huts on a rocky trail that connects with the Mweka trail. We traverse the southern side of Kibo, walking through a spectacular lunar landscape bereft of life on our way to Barafu Camp, on the south-eastern shoulder of Kibo. On reaching camp, we will rest, take lunch and later dinner, and try to get some sleep before the rigors of the night ahead.
Arising at around midnight, we begin our slow march up to Stella Point (5745m) on the edge of the Kibo crater. About an hour from here lays our ultimate goal, Uhuru Peak – at 5895m the highest point in Africa! Here, if we’re on time, we can watch the sun rise over the African continent, take photos and take a breather too!
After a rest at the top, we continue back down to Barafu where we take breakfast and relax for an hour, before continuing our march down the mountain. Today’s walk takes us back down through the alpine desert, heath and moorland zones until we once more enter the forest zone via Millennium Camp. There, amongst the trees, we find the Mweka Campsite, our final stop on the trek.
About a three hours trek from the campsite is Mweka Gate, whereupon reaching there, those who made it to the summit or Stella Point will collect their certificates provided by Kilimanjaro National Park. Lunch will be served here and a car will be waiting to take you back to your hotel and your trek is at an end.
Today we bid farewell to those who opted for the trek only and our car will transfer them to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for their flight back home.
It’s also the start of the 4 day safari for those who opted to do this as well. This 4 day safari will take us to Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro conservation area and Serengeti National Park.
After an early breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your accommodation at 6:30am with packed lunch and head for Tarangire National Park, approximately 4hrs away.
After your guide clears with the permits, he will introduce you to an armed ranger ready to take you on a short walking excursion(2hrs long) in this amazing national park.Later return to your vehicle and proceed with game drives until late in the afternoon when you’ll depart for your lodge for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, depart for Serengeti via Ngorongoro Conservation Area with packed lunchwhile doing game drives enroute. Arrive in time for lunch at Naabi hill gate in Serengeti. After checking in at the park gate, venture into the endless plains of central Serengeti for game drives before heading for an overnight’s stay at your tented camp.
Today finds you starting early in the morning from camp before sunrise with a cup of coffee to kick start you.Drive into the endless plains of the Serengeti just in time to witness the sun rise over the horizon behind a flat top acacia! Continue with game drives until it’s time for breakfast where your guide will choose a pristine spot to lay out the table, proceed with game drives and later return for an early hot lunch at camp before proceeding to Ngorongoro.
Upon reaching Ngorongoro, exit Loduare gate and head for your lodge for a warm shower and some cold refreshments.
After Breakfast, descend down one of the world`s largest unbroken crater with packed lunch for game drives. Go in search of the elusive Black Rhino and mingle with the crater’s huge pride of lions. Enjoy this piece of heaven on earth and later in the afternoon drive back to your hotel in Moshi. On the way back you have the option of visiting a Maasai boma (at no extra cost to you!) to interact with the Maasai and get a glimpse into their interesting lifestyle.
Optional: Maasai cultural interaction (1 hour)
Today marks the end of your beautiful trip and after breakfast, our car will be waiting to transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home. We wish you a safe flight and hope to see you next time.
